Thought it best to get the tray cover to preserve the wood. Our son hasn't eaten in the chair yet but has enjoyed banging his toys on it and it's nice to know it isn't hurting the wood.

This tray is additional and not strictly necessary but if you want to protect your tray from scratches and wear and tear this is a must. Detaching the tray from the wooden one couldn't be easier and run under a tap. Felt tips marks come off easily and wouldn't be the case on the unprotected tray. Not washing the wooden tray keeps it in pristine condition and prevents potential warping from water. For piece of mind and to protect your high chair this really is a must.
