Guide to buying a Baby Changing Bag

Your baby has a lot of essentials that need to be taken with you when you go our, such as nappies, wipes, bottles, toys, portable chair harness and a changing mat. A changing bag needs to be spacious, easy to carry, but should still look good!

Changing bags all have different features to suit a variety of needs. Before you buy, here are a few things to consider:

Size

Think about what will be the right size for you. Do you need a changing bag or a compact change pad/wallet with a few pockets? (Many mums buy both)

All our bag descriptions include their dimensions so you can check that it is suitable for you and your baby.

Changing bags come with a number of features and extras, some to look for are:-

Changing mat

Would you prefer a separate changing mat or an integral changing mat?

An integral changing mat is often larger than a separate mat and can be shaped so your baby can’t touch the floor / changing area. Allerhand Shoulder Bag Urban (Beige/Light Blue) has an integral changing mat. A separate changing mat can be swapped in and out of a variety of bags, or kept in the car for outings. All our changing mats have their dimensions listed so you can compare the sizes. For separate changing mats, see out Changing Mats selection.

Pockets and compartments

Do you want lots of pockets and compartments or a few?

Useful for keeping your and baby’s things separate. Things to look for:

  • Are the pockets net, see through or a different colour from the main bag?
  • Does it have bottle pockets?
  • Is there an integral or separate pouch for wet nappies or wipes
  • Is there a mobile phone pocket or somewhere for your personal items?

Is it washable / wipe-able?

Can it be cleaned in side and out?

Insulated bottle pocket

Useful for keeping bottles or food warm or cold while you are out and about.

How do you want to carry your bag?

Shoulder strap, backpack or to hang it over your stroller? Some bags can be carried in more than one way. Do you want to be able to squash it into your stroller basket?!

Dad friendly?!

Will Dad be happy carrying the changing bag? Messenger style bags or backpacks in neutral colours are popular with Dads, as they don’t look like a baby changing bag! They are also great for either of you to carry laptops, sports gear etc after baby no longer needs quite so many things when you are out.

Multi purpose

Will you want to use your changing bag after you no longer need it for your baby?

Maybe a bag that can be used as a hospital bag or for weekends away? Such as the OiOi Carry All Floral Jacquard Black & Charcoal. Or a bag that looks good as a handbag or a gym bag like the Skip Hop Via Messenger Black? Or a bag for when baby is bigger and doesn't need quite so much when you are out like the Ju-Ju-Be BeSmall Brown Robin

Really good service - went without a hitch - will use you again no problem if I need anything else for my wee grandson. Nice soft cot sheets by the way.
